Case Study: Hitting the high notes with our MAMMA MIA! partnership

Since 2018, we’ve been proud to partner with MAMMA MIA! putting ovarian cancer symptom awareness centre stage while raising more than £162,000 to support our vital work.

At the heart of the partnership is the Dynamo T-shirt, designed exclusively by couture legend Elizabeth Emanuel, with £9 from every T-shirt sold donated to Target Ovarian Cancer.

Sarah Greene, Emma Kane, Judy Craymer, Mazz Murray and Ricky Butt celebrate MAMMA MIA! partnership with Target Ovarian Cancer.

Together, we’ve combined the power of entertainment with life-saving awareness. Campaigns across MAMMA MIA!’s social channels have reached more than 157,000 followers, sharing clear, memorable information about ovarian cancer symptoms. Timed around key awareness moments throughout the year, MAMMA MIA! creates engaging, authentic content with cast members that helps important messages reach new audiences.

One ticket giveaway winner shared how deeply the partnership resonated with their own family’s experience:

Ovarian cancer has had a massive impact on our family since my mum was diagnosed 4 years ago. We are so lucky she has survived, but it and its treatment changed a very active lady in her late 70s into a little old lady. Raising awareness is so important as initially my mum was referred for stomach problems. Thank you for the work you do.”

Every day, 11 women lose their lives to ovarian cancer, most often because it is diagnosed too late. Yet when ovarian cancer is detected at its earliest stage, 9 in 10 women survive.

By shining a spotlight on the symptoms, our partnership is helping more women recognise the signs earlier and seek potentially life-saving medical advice. Alongside symptom awareness, tackling common misconceptions is also essential to improving early diagnosis.

As part of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month each March, the MAMMA MIA! cast supports this mission through engaging content, including a myth-busting quiz that highlights two important facts: there is currently no national screening programme for ovarian cancer, and cervical screening does not detect ovarian cancer.

Our collaboration celebrates the strength, spirit and solidarity of women and allows us to leverage the enormous cultural reach of MAMMA MIA! to shine a brighter spotlight on ovarian cancer symptoms. We are so grateful to MAMMA MIA! for their continued support and for creatively putting our potentially life-saving messages in front of new audiences.”

Anna Cogger, Director of Fundraising & Engagement, Target Ovarian Cancer

MAMMA MIA! represents connection, joy and storytelling, and we’re proud to extend that power to raising awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms. Working with Target Ovarian Cancer enables us to reach audiences with messages that truly matter, helping to spark conversations and promote earlier diagnosis. Together, this partnership demonstrates the powerful role that the arts and storytelling can play in driving life-saving change. By reaching new audiences with clear, memorable messages, MAMMA MIA! has helped increase awareness, challenge misconceptions, and encourage women to act sooner.”

Pharmaceutical industry collaboration

All partnerships will be based on the principles of integrity and transparency benefitting those affected by ovarian cancer with funding or through supporting us to achieve our mission and strategic ambitions.

Our aims:

  • To work with a variety of pharmaceutical companies without giving preference to any one entity
  • Work with pharmaceutical companies that are members of the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) and adhere to the APBI Code of Practice
  • Ensure where a company is not a member of the ABPI, we get written assurances that any partnership or support will be compliant with the ABPI Code of Practice
  • Ensure that the charity’s editorial independence is maintained so that we may continue to speak freely and comprehensively in a balanced way about pharmaceutical companies and their products
